{I have decided to show and tell my favorite shots from 2010….often the pictures that grip me are not the picture-perfect poses, but the images that tell a story…}

I couldn’t help but include a few personal pictures in this countdown. Two really big things happened in our family last year. One of them is that my brother, who is younger than me but almost a foot taller, deployed to Afghanistan. Previous to him moving across the world, we were not sure when he would get home for leave, or if he could get home. So, my sister and I hatched a plan, way back before I had Landon. We decided we would take the new baby to my brother. Growing up, we were terribly close to most of our extended family, and our immediate family is even more so. The idea that my brother, who adores babies and kids, might not meet my new guy before he left to go overseas was unimaginable. Therefore, at 9 weeks old my sister and I packed him up and we flew down to California to do some introductions. What a trip! Landon was a trooper and traveled great. And my sister and I got to meet my brother’s awesome friends, and see exactly where he was living and what this whole “navy” thing was about. But most important was that my brother finally got to meet his first nephew. This picture was taken on the day we left. I look at the picture above, and I notice two things: how little Landon was back then, and how proud and happy my brother looks.  My brother will be home soon, and again, I can’t wait for the day he gets to see Landon.

Can you see the mischief in those eyes? This is my cousin’s little girl Lindsey, and if you follow the blog, you know that I have photographed her almost as much as my little man! We started doing monthly photo sessions when she was 5 months old, and now get together a few times a year. It has been so special to watch her grow, from this nearly bald, chubby little baby to a beautiful, spirited, playful little girl. What I love about this picture is that we had been all over, running around a tree, climbing over the picnic table, but here she is finally sitting somewhat still for a moment, and she just levels her gaze at me like…”ok, here’s your shot….now let me get back to playing!”

Can you tell that these two people love life?

I was blessed to photograph Jennifer and Jeremy’s wedding this summer at the Portland Rose Garden. Jennifer and I have been friends since middle school, back when we thought we were crazy and silly teenage girls. Most of the stories from our friendship cannot and shall-not be repeated, but the mom in me is sitting here shaking my head as I think back over our crazy, fun times together. Fast forward many years, to a fabulous day last year when I first met Jeremy. All the years I’ve known Jennifer, I’ve never seen her as happy, as carefree and giggly as she was that day. And although I don’t know Jeremy all that well, it was totally clear from the moment I first met him that he is totally, completely smitten with her. And you know what? She deserves that. Seeing her truly happy made me happy, and their wedding day was no different. I believe in this picture, Jennifer’s dad is telling Jeremy there is still time, he can still get out of the whole thing. Happily, Jeremy didn’t run :) and they are now married and expecting their first, a little girl who will no doubt make Jen laugh and cry, and who already has Jeremy wrapped around her teeny finger!

And this picture is a perfect example of the above statement :)

I say this often, but I love this family. Alicia is the realtor who sold us our house, and I knew from the start that she was my kind of gal. Sharp, straight talker, I always knew she would be brutally honest with us about where we were in the house-buying process.  I was so excited to photograph her family. She is the mom to three active, hysterical boys! They had me laughing the whole session…I kept imagining my life in 5 or 10 years! After we did the nice, posed laying down on the grass picture, I told everyone to dog-pile on Dad, and this was the image I captured! I love that he looks like the pillar he is for his family…the look on his face says “bring it on, I can take it!” I love each expression…what love and fun they have together!

Is this guy not a total doll? He was so good to me! It was hard to not go overboard with the newborn pictures in my top 10, but I had to feature little Noah. Noah was my #1 super sleeper newborn. He was happily asleep when I arrived, and I don’t think he really woke up at the end as he was being dressed after his photo debut. We moved him, put on and took off hats, he even had a mini session with his proud older sister…and peacefully slept through the whole thing! I love this image the most because it shows all of his best features…his serene sleepy face, those pouty pink lips and his abundance of hair! Noah, thanks for being so good to me and your mama!
